About the Talcum Powder Lawsuit

For about 50 years, it has been suspected that talcum powder can cause ovarian cancer when used for feminine hygiene purposes. Multiple studies have been conducted during that time, many of which have found a more-than-coincidental link between talc powder and ovarian cancer. Most notably, a study in 2003 determined that women who regularly used talc powder for feminine hygiene purposes suffered a 33% increase in their risk of developing ovarian cancer, even if they had no apparent genetic disposition or history for the disease.

Due to this long history of studies and concerns, it is said that J&J reasonably should have known about the ovarian cancer risks caused by its talcum powder products since the early ‘80s. However, the massive corporation has done nothing to warn consumers, label its products, or change the way its products are manufactured. To make the situation worse and to put more liability on J&J, The New York Times has postulated that the company even made numerous attempts throughout the years to conceal any information that could link talc powder to ovarian cancer and other serious illnesses.

Does Talcum Powder Cause Cancer?

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that is incredibly soft compared to most other minerals, especially when powdered. J&J used it as the basis of its baby powder products for this reason. What the company did not disclose or possibly did not understand is that talc can become embedded in the soft tissues of the body, where it causes inflammation and, in severe cases, cancerous growths. This issue can be exacerbated if the talc powder is contaminated with asbestos, which most products are believed to be.

The link between talc powder and ovarian cancer is not just hypothetical. A Lancet medical journal study in 1982 found that nearly all women in its study who had ovarian cancer also had noticeable amounts of talc powder in their ovarian tumors. After decades of further research, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society have both labeled talcum powder as a risk factor for ovarian cancer. J&J, on the other hand, still refuses to accept any liability and refutes every connection between baby powder and cancer.

Talc Powder Lawsuit FAQ

  • What is talc?
Talc is a soft mineral that is mined from talc mines. It is rarely pure in composition, though, because another dangerous mineral tends to form within or adjacent to talc deposits: asbestos.
  • Why is talc dangerous?
Talc poses a minimal to moderate risk of causing bodily harm on its own. But when talc has been contaminated by microscopic asbestos particles, which is the case more often than not, it can become extremely dangerous. Using contaminated talc for feminine hygiene can cause ovarian cancer and inhaling it can cause mesothelioma.
  • Why is J&J liable for ovarian cancer lawsuits?
Johnson & Johnson is the named defendant in talc powder lawsuits because the company has allegedly ignored safety research for decades that linked its baby powder products with ovarian cancer. Corporate negligence that puts consumers at risk can be answered with a claim or lawsuit in pursuit of compensation.
  • Has J&J lost any talc powder lawsuits?
Yes, J&J has already lost several lawsuits for its unsafe talc powder products, as have other baby powder manufacturers. In 2018, a St. Louis jury ordered J&J to pay $4.6 billion to a large group of ovarian cancer plaintiffs, which is the largest verdict award against the company so far.
