Early morning crash may have been caused by drunk driver

Route 50 in Maryland is one of the busiest routes in the state. It is the path that thousands of vacationers take to reach the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay or to get to the ocean-side resort towns just a few hours away. Unfortunately, all of that heavy traffic also means that a serious crash can happen at any time.

One recent accident closed down the route for approximately five hours after a fatal head-on collision killed two drivers. According to Maryland State police, a caller alerted them that a driver was headed the wrong way on Route 50 around the Severn River Bridge. However, before that driver could be located, the wreck occurred.

Though the details are unknown, the 31-year-old female driver was purportedly traveling east in the westbound lane. Her car then impacted another in a head-on collision. The second car was then spun around and hit by another vehicle. Both drivers in the first two cars were killed at the scene. The two occupants in the third vehicle were not seriously injured and received treatment at a nearby hospital and were later released.

Maryland officials stated that speed did not appear to be a factor; however, police did discover alcoholic beverage containers in the first driver's vehicle. The surviving family of the 34-year-old male victim are likely devastated by this horrific crash. After they have had the opportunity to process what has happened and why, they may choose to file a wrongful death suit against the estate of the driver believed to be at fault. If such litigation is successful, they may receive compensation that will enable them to relieve the monetary damages they have sustained as a result of this tragedy.
