How to Prevent Drunk Driving During the Holiday Season
The holiday season is almost upon us and, like most, you are likely planning to celebrate it by either hosting your own parties or attending a few. Holiday parties are a lot of fun and are often a time to reconnect with friends or family members you might not have seen much throughout the year. However, before you start reminiscing over a few cocktails, take a moment to review some of our tips on how you can help prevent drunk driving this holiday season.
Plan Ahead, Raise a Glass
Drinking and celebrations often go hand in hand, but if you plan on enjoying a glass of champagne or another festive drink, you should also plan on getting home safely. If you are hosting a party, be responsible and ensure none of your friends or family get behind the wheel of a vehicle after having a couple of drinks.
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve are among some of the most dangerous holidays to hit the road, so it is important for us all to do what we can to ensure we are not contributing to those dangers.
Murder Charges for Distributing Drugs? It’s Happening in St. Mary’s County
What’s the difference between a drug charge and a murder or manslaughter charge? In St. Mary’s County, Maryland, not much, apparently.
In recent months, there has been a significant uptick in "death by distribution" charges filed against drug offenders and alleged drug dealers in the area. A "death by distribution" charge seeks to charge someone with murder or manslaughter if they sell or distribute an illegal narcotic that leads to a user’s fatal overdose.
Recent stories about "death by distribution" charges in or around St. Mary’s County include but are not limited to:
- A man was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl. A purchaser of the narcotic was found deceased by authorities only a day he spoke to the defendant. (More information can be found in this CBS Baltimore article.)
Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips
If your little ghouls and witches enjoy celebrating Halloween and trick-or-treating, you are probably gearing up for a frightfully good time with them. Before you start helping them choose their costumes or planning out your activities, however, it would be wise to review a few safety precautions first to ensure their trick-or-treating adventures do not turn into a horror story.
Stay Safe on this Spooky Night
Your children probably have a few costume ideas, but it is your duty as their parent to ensure their costume choices will not jeopardize their safety. If possible, try to include some bright or reflective colors, so they are visible to drivers on the road. If bright colors do not fit the color palette for their costume, make sure they carry a glow stick or flashlight. Costumes should also be short enough to prevent tripping accidents.
Here are some other important Halloween safety tips:
- Children under the age of 12 should never go trick-or-treating without a trusted adult. If your children are mature enough and old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult chaperone, make sure they stay in a group and keep to familiar areas.
