Granddaugther and grandmother suffer serious injuries after crash

On a recent morning, a Maryland man heard a young woman screaming for help. He described her as hysterically screaming to call for 911. Once he looked around her, the man noticed a young girl and an older woman lying on the ground. Both had suffered serious injuries.

Reportedly, the 5-year-old girl was being pushed in a stroller by her 60-year-old grandmother first thing in the morning on the sidewalk. The accident is still under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined if it occurred due to vehicle problems, texting while driving or other means of distracted driving. However, at some point, a 22-year-old female driver lost control of her sport utility vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk, striking the woman and her granddaughter. Neighbors report that the intersection consists of a sharp curve and steep incline, making it prone to many accidents every year.

Despite being taken for emergency treatment, both the grandmother and the granddaughter died from their injuries. The driver of the SUV and her passenger both suffered minor injuries. Authorities have not determined if charges will be filed against the driver.

When pedestrian accidents occur, it is not uncommon to suffer serious or fatal injuries; the human body is simply no match for the larger metal frame of a vehicle. There is an enormous amount of details to process in the aftermath of a loved one's unexpected death, which likely includes paying for medical care and burial expenses. Many families find comfort after speaking with a Maryland personal injury attorney to understand all their legal options following a death. Some families may choose to file a claim against the negligent driver's insurance, or some may choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit in civil court.
