Brain injuries need to be addressed quickly

The impacts of a brain injury can devastate a victim's life. In some cases, the effects are lifelong, but there are times when full recovery is possible. The type of injury, the location of it, and the severity can all affect how the victim's future goes.

Some people falsely believe that there isn't anything wrong if you don't notice the injury right away. The truth is that traumatic brain injuries can be symptom-less for days after they occur. This, coupled with some of the general symptoms that come with these injuries, can make them very dangerous.

Closed or open

The two primary types of brain injuries are closed, which means that the skull isn't penetrated, and open, which means that it is. Even though it might seem quite the opposite, closed head injuries often produce effects that are worse than open ones. This is because there is a good chance that the brain jostles in the skull in a closed injury.

Typically, open injuries are due to something penetrating the skull, such as a bullet or knife. While the brain might jostle a bit in these cases, it isn't violent motion. In a closed injury, there is a greater chance that the brain will slam against the skull at least once. This damages the brain and can cause harm away from the initial area of injury.

Scope of impact

The way that the injury changes the brain will affect a victim's recovery. Each area of the brain controls specific functions. The scope of the impact will have to do with where it is injured and how serious the injury is. In the case of situations where hits to the skull caused bruising or damage, the patient might have global effects.

Caring for a brain injury can be complex. Multiple doctor visits, therapy appointments and other programs might be necessary. This can be logistically challenging. If a person has to take time off of work or is unable to work, it can be very hard to afford all of the necessary things that it takes to recover. This adds another level of challenge for these individuals.
