Broken and defective sidewalks can result in serious injuries

It is natural for tree roots, erosion, drainage issues and other natural elements to result in a breakdown of sidewalks, roads and other concrete walking paths over time. Although it is expected to occur, property owners are responsible for maintaining their property and promoting the safety of anyone who enters the property. Maryland residents who have suffered injuries due to an unkempt walkway may be interested to learn one woman's ordeal in another state following an unfortunate fall.

While celebrating New Year's Eve, the woman was being carried on the back of another person when her accident occurred. She claims that some defects in the sidewalk resulted in the man carrying her to stumble. The woman fell and hit her head on the concrete, suffering injuries.

In addition to the defects in the sidewalk, the woman claims that a lack of lighting in the area and inadequate signage with a warning to the potential hazard were evidence of the city's negligence to protect pedestrians. The woman claims her injuries have resulted in numerous medical appointments and loss of income due to the inability to work at times. She filed a lawsuit against the city and requested $10.015 million, but the city is considering a $3 million settlement payment.

Maryland residents who have suffered similar injuries as a result of a property owner's potential negligence may benefit from speaking to an attorney. An attorney who has experience with premises liability lawsuits can advise an injured individual of their chances for possible compensation. Compensation will not change the circumstances but can often help alleviate any financial stress.
