Serious crash shuts down vital route in Ocean City for hours

The southern area of Maryland is home to many forms of wildlife that attract nature lovers and camping enthusiasts alike, especially the Assateague Island wildlife refuge. Because of its location, there are limited routes on and off the island, and when a serious crash occurs, it can result in visitors being stranded. One recent wreck halted traffic for hours while officials worked to assist the injured and clear the scene.

According to the police, the accident occurred in the early afternoon hours. A motorist, who was traveling south toward the island, purportedly failed to maintain his proper lane position. His vehicle veered over into the northern lanes and struck another vehicle. The force of the collision forced the first car back into the original lane.

The first car was then struck by an approaching pickup truck. The driver of the first car suffered serious injuries and required transportation by helicopter to a shock trauma medical center. The driver of the second car was also injured and was transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital equipped to handle traumatic injuries. The driver of the third vehicle did not require treatment.

Route 611 was closed for several hours as the crash scene was thoroughly investigated and cleared. Those visitors who were on the island at the time were unable to leave until the early evening hours. Maryland officials have not stated whether the driver of the first vehicle will face any charges in connection with this serious car wreck. The victim in the second car may require an extended recovery time which may result in significant monetary damages. He may seek information concerning the feasibility of filing a personal injury claim against the party deemed responsible for his injuries and financial losses.
