Safety tips for driving near buses and trucks

The busy roads of Waldorf, Maryland, have many trucks and buses. Drivers of smaller vehicles have specific things that they need to do to avoid getting into a commercial truck accident or a bus crash when driving near a truck or bus.

One of those things is staying out of "No Zones," which are the areas that drivers of large vehicles have a hard time seeing. These areas can be at the front and at the back of the vehicle, as well as spots on the sides. Drivers of large vehicles should be very aware of their "No Zones," and navigate very carefully toward any area for which they have limited visibility.

Correspondingly, drivers of cars that are near big vehicles should know that if they can't see the driver of the big vehicle, that driver probably can't see them either. They should exercise great caution and move to a place of greater visibility. This applies to all situations, even going through a parking lot, but especially to merging and passing, which is incredibly risky unless the drivers of all affected vehicles can see each other.

Cutting it close when near other vehicles is always poorly advised and can result in accidents that damage both vehicles and cause injuries or death to their occupants. Always make absolutely sure the driver of the big vehicle can see you in his or her mirror when in proximity to his or her vehicle.

Another unwise thing that drivers of cars and other small vehicles should avoid when near big vehicles, like trucks and buses, is tailgating. Big vehicles are higher up off the road than smaller ones, and in the event of a collision, the smaller vehicle can actually go under the bigger one in whole or in part. If that happens, the driver and passengers of the smaller vehicle are likely to be injured.
