Firefighter latest victim in string of traffic accidents in 2017

By its nature, fighting fires is a hazardous occupation when compared with the duties of a tow truck driver. However, for one unfortunate fire fighting lieutenant, his job with a towing company led to him being the latest victim in a string of Maryland traffic accidents. According to the police, he is the 15th person to die in 2017 in Cecil County.

The fatal collision was triggered when a driver purportedly lost control of his vehicle. It then collided with the tow truck that was set up along the shoulder of Interstate 95. The car hit the truck, then the vehicle that was being towed. After that, the vehicle collided with the 51-year-old tow truck operator.

The victim, who was also a 20-year veteran of the local fire company as a volunteer fire fighter and an emergency medical technician, was pronounced deceased just minutes after the fatal impact. It was unclear whether the driver of the out-of-control vehicle suffered any injuries in the crashes. Maryland State police closed a portion of the highway while they conducted their investigation.

As of the time of the report, no charges had been filed against the driver; however, the investigation was not yet completed. For the family of the victim, this tragedy has likely been devastating. Along with the physical loss of their loved one, this accident may cause them to sustain heavy financial losses as well due to final expenses and the loss of wages. Regardless of whether the driver believed to be at fault faces any criminal charges in this wreck, the family of the deceased victim may still seek to file a wrongful death suit against him. These suits, when decided in favor of the victims' families, may result in compensation that may ease the financial burdens imposed by these terrible traffic accidents.
